Problem Statement:
Traditional furniture production generates excessive waste and depletes resources, contributing to environmental degradation. Our upcycled record player table addresses this by repurposing discarded materials, offering a sustainable and stylish alternative. By promoting resourcefulness and reducing waste, our project aims to inspire eco-conscious consumption habits.
Target Audience:
People who are passionate about sustainability and like a skater-aesthetic, like artists and such, could benefit from this design. But generally, I think that anyone could benefit from this. While our product will be optimized for a record player and a vinyl collection, it could also be used as a side table that holds various media.
Design Concept and Criteria:
Our design will revolve around upcycling discarded materials, like wood and ceramics, to create a functional and visually appealing piece of furniture. We envision utilizing old wooden furniture and skateboards that members of our group already own. We will be treating this reclaimed material very carefully.
Criteria 1:
All materials must be “Upcycled.”
Criteria 2:
All materials must be free and repurposed
Criteria 3 :
Must be unique
Design Refinement:
After creating the design prototype, we realized that we may not have as much wood and as many skateboards as we thought we did. We decided to create a new sized-down variant with inspiration from another earlier sketch that we did. We also pivoted not to cut any of the skateboards on the machines as it would have damaged some of the wood shop equipment.
